A new study published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology suggests that certain types of sunscreens may have a negative impact on the skin.
According to the study, which looked at the safety of more than 100 types of sunscreen products, the chemical sunscreen ester may act on the cells of the skin to interfere with their ability to fight infection.
“These compounds may be causing irritation to the skin and may be acting on the inflammatory cells of skin to cause skin inflammation,” said study co-author, Dr. Stephanie E. Smith, from the University of Pittsburgh.
Smith’s study involved using a lab-created model to look at how the chemical ester would interact with the cells in the skin, as well as its effect on the body’s natural barrier, the keratinocyte, and the cells that make up the skin’s natural hair.
The research found that ester and related chemicals were capable of triggering inflammation and cell death in cells of keratinocytes, which are the outermost layer of the epidermis of the outer layer of skin.
This finding suggests that the ester molecules may be disrupting keratin cell activity and triggering cell death.
In order to identify the chemical compounds that could be causing skin irritation, Smith’s team developed a simple test that could tell if a product was containing one or more of these chemicals.
The researchers then took a look at the results of the test and found that some products containing ester were not associated with irritation at all.
They also found that the more of the esters in a product, the less likely it was to cause irritation.
For example, the scientists found that when they used a sunscreen containing two esters, the researchers found that only one of the two chemicals caused irritation.
This is important because this is when many people have concerns about the risk of skin irritation caused by the chemicals in sunscreaming sunscopes.
However, when they also tested a sunscreen that contained none of the chemicals, the two compounds did not cause irritation in any of the samples.
“There are a lot of products out there that are trying to reduce irritation by changing the chemical composition of the sunscreen,” said Smith.
“The issue is that people are still being exposed to these chemicals in the sun and this is causing irritation in people.”
Smith and her team hope their research can help patients to choose the best sunscrubber for their needs.
“People need to understand that these chemicals that they use are being released into the environment and are in contact with the environment,” said Dr. Daniel G. Schumacher, a dermatologist at the University at Buffalo and a co-investigator on the study.
“The best way to get out of sunburn is to stop using these chemicals and use sunscreen.”
