Tesla founder and CEO Elon Musk says his company is looking at ways to power its cars using batteries, a move that could save the company billions of dollars.
In a series of tweets on Thursday, Musk said the company is working on battery tech that will allow it to use the battery power stored in the cars internal batteries to power them when the battery is depleted.
Musk also suggested the technology could also power a vehicle’s onboard computer, which is currently used to monitor and control the car.
Tesla has announced plans to release a self-driving car in 2020, but has not provided a timeframe for when that vehicle will be ready to use battery power.
Musk has previously said that the company would like to eventually release self-powered cars that could run on batteries as early as 2025.
