Gas stations have long been staples of the landscape.
But this year, some big names are trying to take their place, like Dunkin Donuts, who has set up billboards in downtown Washington, D.C. and Philadelphia, as well as in some of the country’s biggest cities.
Dunkin’ Donuts said it would replace its Dunkin’s Donuts at D.c. with a new sign, the Washington Post reported.
Dunkins Donuts and Dunkin Brands, two of the largest U.S. food companies, also plan to open a Dunkin Drive-In at the National Mall, which will serve as a hub for pop-up stores.
Starbucks will also start selling coffee at locations across the country starting in 2020, as will McDonald’s.
Dunk-a-thons, which have popped up throughout the country to promote the chain’s coffee and food offerings, are expected to take over the nation’s roads for the first time.
The push to rebrand these locations is part of a broader effort by major retailers to appeal to younger generations, the Post reported, citing people familiar with the plans.
A Starbucks spokesman told the Post the company had no comment.
In Philadelphia, Dunkin said it plans to open three drive-in stores by 2020 and two more by 2021.
Starbucks has not commented on the plan.
The announcement comes as the nation grapples with the growing prevalence of obesity and diabetes, which has been linked to an increased risk of heart disease and stroke.
Dunk In-N-Out said it is expanding its Dunk-in-N Out at the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture and is planning to expand its other locations across America.
In addition to the new signs, Dunk In N Out has also announced plans to bring Dunkin Farms, a brand owned by Dunkin, to a new location in Seattle.
In the meantime, DunkInInNOut.com will serve up its signature fried chicken, baked chicken, and turkey sandwiches.
DunkIns, DunkIns Donuts & Baskin-Robbins will open stores in downtown Seattle and will begin selling the company’s signature breakfast and lunch sandwiches and other breakfast items on Tuesday.
DunkInIns.com said it will launch the service on Tuesday in the area around the new Dunkin-owned Starbucks location.
Dunk and Dunkins said they will also launch a new Dunkins-branded Dunkin Express coffee and juice service in Seattle, starting in 2021.
